Description

The circular economy has emerged as a powerful solution to address pressing environmental and socio-economic challenges within urban contexts. As urban areas continue to grow and face increasing resource demands, it is crucial to adopt sustainable practices that promote resource efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance the overall well-being of urban communities. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of circular economy strategies at the urban scale, with a particular emphasis on urban design and resource management. By examining successful case studies from five European cities, valuable insights into how circular economy practices have been implemented in diverse aspects of urban planning, including waste management, renewable energy, and sustainable architectural design will be gained. By comparing these five cases, the different approaches taken by each city can be analyzed and their impact on sustainability and resilience in urban environments assessed. This comparative analysis will provide a comprehensive understanding of the potential benefits and challenges of urban circular economy practices. Highlighting successful examples of circular economy implementation can encourage and guide future urban development, promoting sustainability and resilience across European cities. Furthermore, the study also points out the areas of improvement, the failures, and the lessons learned by cities, when available. Finally, this study aspires to offer an extensive understanding of the role of circular economy principles at the urban scale, emphasizing their potential to drive sustainability and resilience in city settings. It presents practical case studies, tangible outcomes and real-world implications of adopting circular economy practices within urban landscapes.
